Understanding Anxiety: A Culturally Grounded Approach to Healing

How culture shapes the way we experience — and overcome — anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health challenges in the world — yet the way it shows up, and the way we talk about it, varies enormously across cultures.

How Culture Shapes Anxiety

For many Latinx individuals, anxiety may manifest as physical symptoms — persistent headaches, stomach discomfort, fatigue, or a racing heart — rather than the emotional language often used in Western mental health settings. This is sometimes called somatization, and it's not a sign of weakness. It's a reflection of how our bodies carry what our words sometimes cannot.

In many cultures, there is also a deep sense of familismo — the prioritization of family over individual needs. While this is a profound strength, it can also mean that personal anxiety goes unaddressed because seeking help feels selfish, or because mental health struggles carry stigma within the community.

The Role of Stigma

Stigma around mental health remains a significant barrier in many communities. Phrases like "just pray about it" or "we don't talk about those things" are common — and while faith and community are genuine sources of strength, they are most powerful when paired with professional support, not used as a reason to avoid it.

A Strengths-Based Path Forward

At Finding Solutions, Inc., we approach anxiety through a strengths-based, culturally responsive lens. This means:

  • Honoring your cultural identity as a resource, not an obstacle
  • Working in your primary language — English or Spanish
  • Using evidence-based tools like EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) adapted to your lived experience
  • Recognizing that healing is not one-size-fits-all

When to Seek Support

If anxiety is interfering with your sleep, your relationships, your work, or your ability to enjoy daily life — it's time to talk to someone. You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support. Reaching out is an act of courage, not weakness.

We offer secure telehealth sessions in English and Spanish, available to clients in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
