The Gottman Method: Building a Stronger, More Connected Relationship

Evidence-based couples therapy rooted in decades of research

Every couple argues. Every couple goes through seasons of disconnection. But not every couple has the tools to navigate those moments in a way that brings them closer rather than further apart. That's where the Gottman Method comes in.

What Is the Gottman Method?

Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman after more than 40 years of research with thousands of couples, the Gottman Method is one of the most evidence-based approaches to couples therapy available today. It's built on a deep understanding of what makes relationships thrive — and what causes them to break down.

The Four Horsemen

Dr. Gottman identified four communication patterns that, when left unchecked, predict relationship breakdown with remarkable accuracy. He calls them the Four Horsemen:

  • Criticism — attacking your partner's character rather than addressing a specific behavior
  • Contempt — treating your partner with disrespect, mockery, or superiority
  • Defensiveness — deflecting responsibility and counter-attacking
  • Stonewalling — shutting down and withdrawing from the conversation

Recognizing these patterns in your relationship is not a reason for shame — it's an opportunity for growth.

What Gottman-Trained Therapy Looks Like

As a Gottman Method trained therapist, Melba works with couples to:

  • Identify and interrupt negative communication cycles
  • Build deeper friendship and emotional intimacy
  • Develop shared meaning and goals
  • Navigate conflict in a way that leads to understanding, not escalation
  • Rebuild trust after betrayal or disconnection

Is Couples Therapy Right for You?

Couples therapy is not just for relationships in crisis. Many couples seek support proactively — to strengthen communication, prepare for major life transitions, or simply invest in their relationship. If you and your partner are ready to do that work, we're here to support you.
